Getting tired from all those remote controls for your TV, receiver, set-top box and satellite radio? The chances are that with the new trend in user and technology interaction, you can soon forget about seven different remote controls. Your home entertainment devices will be directed by your gesture or voice.
Here at SXSW I am learning that SmartTVs have got smarter again. New prototypes of TV sets being displayed allow you to select features just by a gesture of your hand, similar to Microsoft`s Kinect technology which is used for gaming on Xbox consoles.
I saw objects being manipulated on screens in ways similar to what Tom Cruise did in the movie “Minority Report.” With his hand in front of the screen the presenter virtually touched the buttons and started TV apps. Voice commands into the remote control also enabled feature selection on the TV. Voice control options are displayed on the screen.
New technology presentations like these not only remind of those not so old sci-fi movies, but shows how the creativity of their authors has influenced reality so many years in the future. The “Holodeck” technology might be just around the corner.
