Twitter Plans to Go Beyond Its 140-Character Limit

But if you keep removing key differentiating features — like, say, an arbitrary character limit — then at some point the product stops being the product. Twitter’s character limit is what distinguishes it from Tumblr. While some commentators think this change will help Twitter relevant, it may have the opposite effect, with Twitter losing the key trait that makes it unique.
