Just days into the new year and American executives are yet again being asked to flex and increase their justice, equity, diversity and inclusion (JEDI) IQ. The events of the last two weeks have further solidified the need for corporate executives – and the companies they lead – to address the realities of serious and deeply rooted inequity, systemic racism and bias in the United States.
Last June, nearly three quarters (74%) of Americans reported they were concerned companies would move on to the next issue without making the changes they promised to address racial inequalities, according to our research. We again find ourselves at a junction when corporate America must reinforce its commitment to JEDI, lead with authenticity and integrity, and do so with a sense of empathy for the complexity of the social justice issues facing our nation and the world. Although 71 percent of executives say they have never felt more pressure to respond to social justice issues in their entire careers, it is clear many still have work to do on this journey.
